Q: How do you feel about drinking? I know that Jesus turned water into wine, but wasn't it different back then? Wasn't "wine" anything from the grapevine? Most people say that priests are not supposed to drink or get drunk, but doesn't the Bible also call Christians a "royal priesthood?" A: Our website already offers a good bit of teaching on this subject. Please follow these links to an online tract and a lesson outline: Northern Kentucky Church Of Christ > Teen Scene > Drug Abuse The tract includes a discussion of what wine and strong drink was like in Bible times compared to the distilled beverages available today. The lesson outline deals with more than just drinking alcohol, but it should cover the subject adequately. You're right about priests. It is a term misused in religion today. The New Testament nowhere speaks of a special class of Christians in the church as priests. As Christians, we are all priests in the church (1 Pet 2:5,9; Rev 1:6) The idea is foreign to scripture that a special "priestly" class exists in the church today which is distinct from regular or ordinary Christians and has special laws and prohibitions. Thanks for asking. We hope this helps. |
