The Conscience
I. Definition of the conscience: Hebrews 10:1-4 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and
not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which
they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2For then
would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified,
would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3But in those sacrifices there is
a reminder of sins every year. 4For it is not possible that the blood of bulls
and goats could take away sins.
Romans 2:12-16: For as many as have sinned without law will also
perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the
law 13(for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the
doers of the law will be justified; 14for when Gentiles, who do not have the
law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are
a law to themselves, 15who show the work of the law written in their hearts,
their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts
accusing or else excusing them) 16in the day when God will judge the secrets of
men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.
Romans 9:1-2 I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience
also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, 2that I have great sorrow and
continual grief in my heart.
II Corinthians 13:4-5 For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He
lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with
Him by the power of God toward you. 5Examine yourselves as to whether you are in
the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in
you?-unless indeed you are disqualified.
II. Importance of the conscience
Acts 24:16 This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience
without offense toward God and men.
Acts 23:1 Then Paul, looking earnestly at the council, said, "Men
and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this
day."
Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.
III Practical Situations / Application involving the conscience
I Corinthians 8
I Corinthians 10:23-33 All things are lawful for me, but not all
things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.
24Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being.
25Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience'
sake; 26for "the earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness."
27If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to
go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience' sake.
28But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," do not eat
it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience' sake; for "the
earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness." 29"Conscience," I
say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my liberty judged by
another man's conscience? 30But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken
of for the food over which I give thanks?
31Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory
of God. 32Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church
of God, 33just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own
profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
Romans 8:1-23
IV. How does one train the conscience?
Hebrews 10:22-23 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of
faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed
with pure water. 23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,
for He who promised is faithful.
Hebrews 9:14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the
eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from
dead works to serve the living God?
Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever
things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever
things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue
and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things.
V. How does one know if he/she has a good conscience?
I Peter 3:20-21 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine
long-suffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in
which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21There is also an
antitype which now saves us-baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh,
but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of
Jesus Christ,
II Corinthians 1:12 For our boasting is this: the testimony of our
conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly
sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly
toward you.
VI. Violating the conscience
James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him
it is sin.
Conscience
That faculty of the mind, or inborn sense of right and wrong, by which we judge
of the moral character of human conduct. It is common to all men.
Perverted Conscience (John 16:2; Acts 26:9; Rom. 2:15).
It is spoken of as "defiled" (Titus 1:15),
It is described as "seared" (1 Tim. 4:2).
A "conscience void of offense" is to be sought
Cultivated (Acts 24:16; Rom. 9:1; 2 Cor. 1:12; 1 Tim. 1:5, 19; 1 Pet. 3:21).
